Engine Disassembly - August 6, 2020
If you like to see pictures of engine disassembly, then you'll love this update.
There are many reasons for the disassembly:a) replace 16 year old seals and gaskets
b) replace other wear items like the water pump, harmonic balancer, belt tensioner, idler pulley, etc
c) clean it completely
d) paint some of the parts for better cosmetics
e) inspect it to see if anything looks worn or damaged (based on what I've seen, I'm not going to remove the heads - there's no need)
0) The new oil pan that I didn't show in the last update:
1) Back to disassembly...I started by labeling all the connectors, and then removed the wiring harness:
2) Coil Packs and intake came off next. It's much easier it is to do this work on an engine stand, than when installed in the vehicle.
Coil Packs Off:
4) Front Stuff:
Alternator and Power Steering Pump removed:
5) Timing Chain Cover Removed - very clean inside...this concludes the disassembly - everything from here on out will be to reassemble it. No surprises - everything was in good shape:
5) Timing Chain Cover cleaned and new seal\gasket installed. I had to buy another special alignment tool for the seal:
As a side note, I've been using these blue shop towels, and they have worked well. When you buy the 12 pack like this, each blue towel costs about 3 cents each.
Less frequently, I use the typical red cloth shop towels like these, which are about 17 cents each. I don't wash them after use - they are just trashed.
Next steps...continue to clean, paint and replace all the items. And get them back on the engine. This sounds easy, but it will be time-consuming - especially cleaning all the nooks and crannies in the block, so paint will stick to it.
